About the Coalition

Our Approach

Shutting down illegal wildlife trade online requires an integrated, international solution. WWF, TRAFFIC, and IFAW collaborate with companies across continents to unite the industry and maximize impact alongside efforts of law enforcement to reduce wildlife trafficking online.

The Coalition is a voluntary collaboration that shares tools and guidance to help companies prevent and remove online wildlife content that is potentially illegal and/or unsustainable. It is not a certification scheme, nor are companies charged a membership fee. The success of this approach can be viewed in our 2024 Progress Update.

What companies do

Each Coalition company member develops an action plan to address wildlife trafficking unique to their platforms and products. Example activities include:

Strengthen Prohibited Content Policies: This first step addresses what users are allowed to sell or promote on the platform.

Train Company Staff to Detect Prohibited Content: Once it’s clear what’s prohibited, help staff detect illegal or unsustainable wildlife content.

Enhance Automated Detection: Leverage block filters, large language models (LLMs), and image recognition to find suspicious content at speed and scale.

Inform and Empower Users to Report: Engage users to be a part of the solution by helping report suspicious content.

Share learning and promote best practices across the sector for an industry-wide front against wildlife trafficking online
